Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG; AEX: PHIA), the global leader in lighting, together with Dubai Municipality, have been awarded the accolade of Lighting Project of the Year at the Middle East Lighting Awards, held on Monday, 2 March 2015 at the World Trade Centre in Dubai, UAE. The winning initiative was the LED lighting solution for Dubai Municipality in light of their Sustainability Initiative, and was awarded the lighting project of the year.
Rami Hajjar, General Manager of Philips Lighting in the Middle East, said: “We are very proud to be working with Dubai Municipality to transform Dubai into the most sustainable city in the world. The municipality realized that reducing energy consumption through lighting is a quick win with substantial returns for Dubai from both an environmental and financial perspective. We are on the right track and going at the right pace. As the leaders in global lighting, we are very pleased to work with such an ambitious city that always strives for the best.”
Philips was among two other projects competing to win the coveted award. Finalists were announced on 17 February 2015 and featured leading projects across the region. The award follows the milestone signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Dubai Municipality and Philips Lighting to support the transformation of the Municipality’s 262 buildings from conventional lighting infrastructure to energy efficient LED based solutions. From the initial signing of the MOU back in October 2013, Philips and Dubai Municipality have forged a partnership to contribute to better sustainability for the buildings and sites of Dubai Municipality. With this project, the Municipality intends to lead by example.
Phase 1 of the project saw 15 buildings of Dubai Municipality having their lighting installation upgraded to new LED technology. This was in order to meet the key objectives of reducing the electricity bill on lighting by 50%, reducing maintenance costs and, most importantly, to improve the quality of lighting for the employees of the Municipality.
Philips, along with its partner Al Ghandi Electronics, proposed a unique end to end solution. This took the form of a study to identify the potential of the project, the proposal of a solution for all applications in the buildings, the removal of the old lighting fixtures and the supply and installation of new fixtures with the latest LED technology. This provided a hassle-free upgrade for the Municipality.
All objectives of the project have been met with, including a load reduction of 57% as compared to the target of 50% that was set, and positive feedback gained from the employees of the Dubai Municipality on the improved quality of the lighting.
