A promising future for the UK’s rail industry: Our experience at Railtex

    May 27th, 2022

Recently, myself and several other members of the Signify UK&I Public System & Services Team attended Railtex, at Olympia, London.

Railtex, the leading one-stop-shop event for the entire railway industry in the UK. The event, also named Infrarail, reflects the dynamic developments in the sector and the vision of the rail network of the future. The event is the first choice for railway professionals on the lookout for the latest technologies and the ideal platform for exchanging knowledge and views on the latest developments at the heart of the industry- all to attain the business objectives of railway operators.

Firmly established as the place to be for companies active in today’s thriving rail market, Railtex / Infrarail provides suppliers to the railway sector with a unique marketing platform to conduct business. It was a great experience – three days full of insightful conversations!

Rail transport is typically seen as a sustainable and carbon "friendly" form of transport. However, to achieve carbon neutrality and achieve net-zero emissions there is still ground to cover. Over the three days at Railtex there were many conversations with us how connected lighting can help the sector improve its emissions and what was keeping the rail sector from reaching their ambitions and goals.

At the event, we had a stand setup, showcasing our latest innovations like 3D Printing, Interact Software and UV-C disinfection technology and our professional Philips luminaires accompanied with our Interact software management system. All these innovations are solutions that can support the rail sector ‘ride’ towards a sustainable and safer future.

    Three days of insightful conversations

What was clear to us over the course of the event was that new technologies and innovations can support the sector to achieve their ambitions and goals. It was evident that a lack of understanding and cross discipline collaboration was limiting the progress. A good example would be how crucial lighting's role is within the built environment in terms of energy consumption and that a simple upgrade to LED lighting technology is a solution that can reduce the energy consumption in buildings like ticketing halls, stations, train depots, car parks etc. by 50% to 80%, when compared to their incandescent counterparts.

It was encouraging to see that many professionals were keen to learn how the latest connected lighting innovations and solutions can support the rail sector improve it's maintenance & operations procedures, plus push towards carbon neutrality.   For example, many of the professionals were unaware that IoT of lighting could further enhance and provide benefits in operational efficiency through our Interact platform; not only reduce energy consumption and cost but reduce the bottom-line operational cost in managing their estate and assets.

Another topic of interest that emerged from the conversations was that of how to keep passengers and staff protected against virus and pathogens, a growing concern from the pandemic. This is where our UV-C solutions was the hero of the conversations. On the stand, we had the Philips UV-C disinfection floor standing unit that was running in the background over the course of the 3 days. The Philips UV-C disinfection air unit is a powerful and effective way to disinfect circulating air. It draws air into the unit where UV-C radiation inactivates up to 95% of micro-organisms in 80m3 within just 1 hour (circular coverage 28m2). With no need for mounting, the free-standing unit can be wheeled into place in a wide range of professional applications, from offices and retail to hospitality. The aesthetic design delivers well-controlled UV-C radiation (RG0) and can also be used when people are present.

For more than 35 years, Signify has been at the forefront of UV technology with a proven track record of innovation and strong application expertise. Recently, new families of UV-C products have been launched – portable, and fixed ceiling/wall mounted air units, disinfection chambers for objects, and surface luminaires that disinfect environments when no one is present. UV-C disinfection technology can add an extra layer of protection to their passengers whether they in a waiting room, ticketing hall or on a train.

    A bright future

It was refreshing and equally promising to see organisations like the Rail Infrastructure Association having such a diverse mix of employees, with a strong female representation. We had the chance to connect some the young apprentices within the rail sector and discussed their thoughts on the industry and what the young and aspiring workforce felt about the UK’s green recovery - which added a fresh perspective into the industry. With this new energy and diversity entering the sector, there is an openness to explore more ideas and new innovations which can be implemented into the rail industry. An exciting time ahead for the sector!

To close, it was fantastic to see how many professionals showed an interest in change and new innovations.  We are glad to have met stalwarts of the industry be part of the force that can drive the rail industry to a greener and safer future.
