Lighting the way forward with partnerships

For the lighting industry, the most strategic drivers are the decarbonisation of buildings and making buildings intelligent or future ready. In a digital era increasingly focused on sustainable energy and environmental awareness, connected lighting offers an innovative solution to tackle these critical challenges. Another critical aspect in making buildings future ready, is the impact that lighting can have on its inhabitants. We must not underestimate the positive impact of that lighting can have on the minds and bodies of its inhabitants. For instance, by tuning light to support our circadian rhythms and emotional needs, we can promote human comfort, wellbeing and performance- now that’s human centric! Human centric lighting opens a floodgate of opportunity for lighting manufacturers, developers and designers. At Signify we’re inspired by ideas for new products and applications, and when our vision aligns with customer’s needs, we can reach new horizons.

As the world leader in lighting, we recognise our responsibility to play a key role in shaping the future of our industry and beyond. We also understand we cannot achieve this alone. We believe the future is all about partnerships and collaboration, which are the critical enablers to achieving the best in class and striving to make it even better. Together, we build the future of the connected lighting.

At Signify, we take our role seriously and lead by example in our ways of working or in the partnerships we make. Our Climate Transition Plan 2040, for example, details our SBTi-validated plan to reduce GHG emissions by 90% across the entire value chain and reach net zero by 2040. As for the partnerships we form, we operate in an ecosystem where collaboration is key to success, and each party contributes to advancing mutually shared objectives. Be it a brand partnership, partnerships that help go-to-market strategies or partnerships that help shape the industry. Each of these have a critical role to play.

Working with our partners for shared goals

For us as a technology leader offering hardware, software, systems & services in the lighting industry, partnerships can take many shapes and forms; they could be with facility managers (FM), distributors & wholesalers, Contractors & Installers, the Certified System Integrators (CSIs), the design/specification community or even the government and bodies shaping regulation, to name a few. In 2024, we took great pride in expanding our partnership philosophy; now, in 2025, we aim to take this even further. For this, let's look at how our partnerships are making a difference to drive the needs of our customers:

Working with brand partners: In the summer of 2024, Formula 1 fever broke out at Signify because of our partnership with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team. We are proud to partner with a team that shares a passion for responsible innovation to drive progress in our industries and beyond. Our joint commitment to act responsibly will lead us to develop transformative and disruptive new technologies that enhance performance to benefit people and the planet and elevate experiences for fans trackside and at home. We are leading the transformation and decarbonisation of the lighting industry, and with our new partnership comes a commitment from Signify to support the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team in its goal to become one of the world's most sustainable sports teams, including the installation of our industry-leading energy-efficient, connected, and circular lighting solutions, as well as developing the team's own Climate Transition Plan.

Working with the lighting industry: One of the most important examples of change-maker partnerships is the ongoing relationships we share within our industry. These relationships ensure that our lighting solutions are designed to make a difference and can reach beyond our doors. From designing to commissioning a project, no lighting solution can make an impact until the right partner is involved. One example is the relationships with our CSIs, strategically selected for their unique expertise across a wide range of industries and the complementary software solutions and services they provide. Even facility managers who can see how a space is used can use lighting to ensure the health and well-being of occupants and the energy efficiency of any building. Lastly, bringing all of this together is our partnership with the electrical wholesaler and distributor networks. It is their role in the partnership strategy that enables a consistent delivery of products, solutions and services across the breadth of the country.

Another exciting example of working with the industry is our ongoing work with Pineapple Partnerships. Driven by the same vision of making the built environment sustainable, the partnership is the perfect example of how forces within the industry can come together to harness the 'power' of two. As the built environment faces many challenges around decarbonisation and adapting to climate change, Pineapple Partnerships presents an exciting model that allows us to offer our lighting solutions to the market in an accessible, affordable and scalable way. This model makes us a part of an integrated offer, making us a unique and critical technology partner in sustainable solutions for the built environment

A renewed focus on the design & specification community: Lighting designs are rapidly becoming more creative and ambitious than ever, driven by client requirements having increased focus on all pillars of sustainability. To work more closely with the design community and to support their specific needs, we have launched the Pioneers of Light portal. As the name rightly suggests, the portal is designed specifically for the lighting design community's needs, challenges, and workflows. It is the one address for all their needs to empower them to bring their client's projects and vision to life with a lighting solution that makes a difference. As a partnership first company, the hub is specifically created to empower the design community to find the perfect lighting for their projects.

Working with industry bodies: Working with industry bodies is another crucial element for us. Being members of organisations like the Lighting Industry Association, ILP (Institute of Lighting Professionals), CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers), Corporate Leaders Group and The Climate Group, to name a few, are associations that help deliver on our strategy and its drivers to support our sustainability and liveable cities goals.

Lighting projects can be complex. Whether it's design, installation, commissioning or IoT integration – it takes the most capable professionals to bring it all together. Therefore, our partnerships are powered by technology, data and a shared purpose to achieve sustainable transformation.

    In conclusion

Partnerships are key to solving issues and should be formed, with a shared vision, with a view to solve for a wide variety of challenges that focus on all pillars of sustainability- that's key to success.

It is also key to understand that it is the right partnerships that enable a digital design that joins together the different elements of the life cycle of any asset. From design to build to operate and maintain- the interactions are increasingly digital, and it is the right partnerships that form an ecosystem to enable that interaction seamlessly. So, going back to the strategic drivers of the lighting industry, it is this digital design of an ecosystem that enables sustainability at every step of the journey. This not only makes a building fit for purpose but also ensures a building keeps in mind the well-being of its people.

A strong partnership adds up to more than the sum of its parts. The right partnerships can be truly game changing.
