IWD2024: Celebrating the women at the workplace

    March 12, 2024

When I think of Women's day, a famous saying by Sheryl Sandberg comes to mind- "In the future, there will be no female leaders. There will just be leaders." Every year, 8 March, people worldwide celebrate International Women's Day (IWD). It's a great time to reflect on the progress society has made with gender equality, celebrates women's achievements, encourage inclusion, and recognise the work that is still left to be done.

At Signify, we are committed to fostering an environment that empowers women within our organisation and beyond, inspires positive change, and unites us in our collective efforts to create a more empowering workplace and equitable world. But before we dwell into that, let's learn more about IWD.

    The history of Women's Day

International Women's Day is recognised annually around the world to celebrate women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

International Women's Day has existed for over 100 years, since 1911. It is supported by organisations, groups, governments, and individuals worldwide committed to a more gender-equal world.

    IWD 2024

We forge a better world by inspiring others to understand and value women's inclusion. And when we are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment. The theme of the IWD 2024 is #InspireInclusion, a reminder to celebrate and honour the day to forge a more inclusive world for women and all collectively. The theme truly encapsulated the theme of the day.

Inclusion plays a crucial role in achieving gender equality, and Inspire Inclusion encourages everyone to recognise the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life.

For Signify, International Women's Day is an opportunity to:

The theme for this year resonates deeply with our values as we strive to create a workplace where every woman can succeed without limitations. At Signify, we are committed to fostering an environment that empowers women within our organization and beyond, inspires positive change, and unites us in our collective efforts to create a more empowering workplace and equitable world.

Talking about inclusion and equal opportunities for all can encourage a workplace that encourages women to get involved in areas and industries that are largely made up of men. Take, for instance, the lighting industry in the UK. If we look back a few years, this was a male-dominated industry. Gladly, things have changed over the years with the development of roles and opportunities. We now see more females across levels in the industry – electricians, installers or leadership positions. For us IWD presents an opportunity to:

Reinforce Signify's commitment - To be a great place to work where people belong and have an impact.

Engage with employees - Engage employees across the company and raise awareness about inclusion and gender equality.

Engage with external candidates - Position Signify as a great place to work for Women and all genders by sharing our people's stories, our journey & our progress in DE&I.

    In conclusion

Awareness days can be a useful starting point for enabling a wider conversation about issues. The day of IWD, of course, is just one way of recognising the gender issues that still affect millions of people across the world. Making the change and having a real impact can come from a constant reminder of the work already done; after all, we have come a long way. At the same time, we can't rest on the success seen so far; we need to keep working on the work that still needs to be done.
