Philips sponsors Tom Harfleet’s Conceptual Garden, "The Bright Idea" at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2011

    June 6, 2011

London, UK – Philips is delighted to sponsor landscape architect, Tom Harfleet, who will be entering his garden design, The Bright Idea, in the Conceptual Garden category at this year’s Hampton Court Palace Flower show. The event, which takes place between July 5th – July 10th is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Setting himself the challenge to repeat his success at last year’s show, gold medalist Harfleet* explains the concept behind The Bright Idea, “All the best ideas come from nature and my aim is to recreate this in this year’s design showing how technology and nature are linked. The flexible and dynamic characteristics of LEDs have enabled me to realize this “eureka moment”, The Bright Idea, in a way which I hope will inspire visitors but above all make them smile.”

The ambitious project hopes to embody the human thought process replicating the brainwave of someone who is dreaming. A fine mesh tube will span the length of the garden and has a central spine covered in LEDs which will pulse along the 27metre structure reinforcing the wave theme.  The planting surrounding the formation will be single species of grass which moves in the breeze and is used to represent brain matter.

Interspersed in the grass are vivid pools of brightly coloured flowers strategically positioned at points where the structure strikes the ground as though the idea being carried along the brainwave is spilling out.

Commenting on the initiative, Peter Maskell, Chairman and Managing Director of Philips Electronics UK Ltd said, “We are delighted to be able to sponsor and encourage young, talented designers in this way, particularly in projects such as this which showcase how light can be used in new and imaginative ways enhancing the visitor experience.”
