Junction 22, M6, United Kingdom – Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHI) in collaboration with the UK Highways Agency and their main vehicle for highway management, AOne+, provided the slip road at Junction 22 of the M6 with an energy efficient LED lighting solution that not only produces a high quality white light, but also benefits from a long life time; signaling an end to the cost and hassle of constant maintenance.
AOne+ required a solution that would help the Highways Agency reduce both its energy consumption and carbon footprint. With its innovative carbon neutral design and an excellent energy efficient performance, Philips’ SpeedStar incorporating LEDGINE Greenline provided the perfect solution for this project, while adhering to strict lighting standards. Philips’ SpeedStar also provided AOne+ with the low maintenance solution that it was looking for thanks to the luminaire’s long lifetime of 60,000 hours. Furthermore, SpeedStar’s long life time will not only help reduce operational costs but improve traffic planning to avoid disruption to road users.
While SpeedStar is designed to provide precisely the right level of light, in the right place, at the right time, it also produces a high quality white LED light which has the potential to reduce and prevent road accidents. Improved visibility is a major contributor to road safety as it enables drivers to detect movement faster and at a greater distance, giving them more time to stop. Additionally, because white light is brighter than yellow light it becomes feasible to reduce light output while not compromising on quality, and further enhances energy savings.
Neal Symmons of the Highways Agency said: “Public authorities across the UK are increasingly looking to lower their energy and maintenance bills by investing in the most efficient technology. However, public safety remains our highest priority so we must also continue to invest in the best quality technology at the same time. Philips has provided us with a lighting solution that not only helps to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs, but provides superior lighting quality that helps to enhance safety and security on the roads.”
Philips’ SpeedStar luminaire also gives a uniform light distribution with a smooth transition from primary to secondary areas. With its LEDGINE technology, it is a future-proof, upgradeable and easily serviceable solution that can provide further energy savings through its compatibility with most lighting controls.
LED lighting is revolutionising functional outdoor lighting for major roads and highways and while some businesses and Public authorities are delaying their decision to upgrade their lighting for fear it will become outdated, the introduction of future-proof LEDGINE technology means they can make that switch now.
