Well-being in the workplace is one of the hot topics when it comes to designing office spaces. Whether it’s putting on a free yoga class at lunchtime or keeping the fruit bowl well-stocked, workplaces are having to do more to make sure employees are feeling happy and healthy.
When it comes to creating a positive workspace, exposure to nature could be the answer. From a three-hour hike to a stroll through your local park, getting outside and exploring the great outdoors is proven to improve your mental and physical well-being.[1] [2]
What if we could bring the outside, inside?
Philips luminous textile with Kvadrat Soft Cells can do that. They offer the best solution to turn plain workplaces into dynamic spaces that people actually want to work in. They can display video content that improves well-being by creating a relaxing environment or subtly influencing behaviour (such as encouraging workers to be more active), while their acoustic properties absorb sound to allow for better concentration in busy workspaces.

Light meets nature
A major benefit of the luminous textile panels is that they can display nature content of your choice. Whether it’s daisies gently fluttering in the wind, or sunlight streaming through leaves, looking at nature is certainly relaxing. And when it comes to well-being at work, this is important; this study3 found that participants who looked at photos of nature achieved lower scores on stress scales than those who hadn’t.
This was the exact reason David Davenport-Firth, Managing Partner at Ogilvy Health, chose our luminous textile panels for the WPP health practice workspace. “One of the reasons we chose the luminous textile surface is that it allows us to bring together light and nature in a dynamic way.”
So, how does it work?
Philips luminous textile with Kvadrat Soft Cells features multi-colored LEDs that sit within textile panels. Super easy to install, the panels display video content of your choice at the click of a button; meaning those nature images are ready and waiting to instantly transport you to a world of calm.
Available in a wide range of sizes to suit your space, you can choose to create one huge mood wall, or maybe stagger them along a staircase. Basically, anything is possible!
They even offer acoustic properties, dampening sound and softening echoes – perfect for creating a tranquil environment among the hustle and bustle of WPP Health Practice’s reception area.

Lighting up lunchtime
Ogilvy were keen to show how the panels can be used in different ways. For example, they have combined the influence of priming4 – a technique where subtle imagery can influence human behavior – with the luminous textile panels, aiming to champion healthy eating.
They chose to display colorful images of fruit and vegetables, with the soft nature of the video content suggesting to workers that they need to get their five-a-day. Subliminal messaging has never been so wholesome!
What’s more, the luminous textile panels can be adapted to suit the time of day. You can really change the mood of a space; with more dynamic, vibrant video content enlivening and invigorating, while gentle, soft imagery in muted tones can ensure a peaceful environment.
You can even display the word ‘lunch’ at – you guessed it – lunchtime, in a move to remind busy workers to take a well-deserved break.
“Here in our reception lounge – and by choosing different imagery with different lighting and different dynamics – we can very much change the mood,” David explains.

As for WPP, David puts it best; “This is just the very beginning. And what we are finding as we experiment with the luminous textile panels, is that it is actually becoming more and more exciting.”
