RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances)
Released in February 2022, the RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, such as the use of mercury in lighting products. The directive included exemptions for a series of products that have now been revised by the European Commission – with great impact on fluorescent lighting products.
Main consequences of RoHS
For general lighting purposes:
• A ban on T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps from August 24, 2023
• A ban on CFLni lamps from February 24, 2023
SLR (Single Lighting Regulation)
The SLR (Single Lighting Regulation, also known as Ecodesign Regulation; in place since September 2021) additionally phases out products that fail to meet efficiency requirements.
Main consequences of SLR
• A series of products already phased out by September 1, 2021
• Upcoming: ban of halogen caps from September 1, 2023
• Upcoming: ban of T8 fluorescent lamps (600 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm)*
*Affected by SLR and RoHS, RoHS leading by ban date
The energy efficiency classes have been renamed and rescaled: from ‘A++ to E’ to ‘A to G’. Products are being classified on a new calculation basis and a QR-code helps customers quickly see product details within the EPREL database.
