Bringing underwater sunshine to Aysén, Chile

Signify’s aquaculture LEDs are lighting up Australis Seafoods’ sustainable marine-based fish farm in Chile

Wild fish stocks are under constant strain due to unsustainably high customer demands. According to the UN, a staggering 90% of the world’s marine fish stocks are being exploited, overexploited or depleted.

Australis Seafoods specializes in the farming of salmon and trout and is committed to sustainable fish farming. This is an industry that can help significantly in reducing the pressure on wild fish stocks. The company needed a lighting system capable of promoting the health and growth of their fish while staying true to their commitment to sustainability.

    Let there be light!

Signify installed underwater lights of up to 100,000 lumen, mimicking the summer sun. In the summer, in fact, fish convert feed better which also translates into faster growth rates. This also means less food waste, cleaner water and lower costs to feed the fish.

On top of that, taking into account that fish are drawn to light, Signify installed its aquaculture LED system at a depth of five meters. This reduces infections caused by sea lice, which are found closer to the surface.

As the Leader of Signify’s Agricultural Lighting business Bill Bien explains: “With our LED lighting we help customers to improve feed conversion rates, reduce food costs and lower risks of infection, creating greater overall efficiency in sea-based salmon farms.”

Innovation in aquaculture yields great results

Having worked in the Chilean salmon industry for years now, Signify has been developing and providing innovative connected lighting systems capable of optimizing living conditions and salmon production.

The first of Signify’s lighting system installed by Australis was in the Moraleda fish farm in Region XI, Aysén, Chile. Following the great results achieved with the growth and feed conversion rates on the fish farm, Signify was asked to upgrade the entire Aysén site.

In 2019, Australis Seafoods was named the best Skretting 2019 Fish farm in the Region XI after realizing one of the best production results in the company’s records.

Following these successes, Signify has also been tasked to illuminate Australis’ fish farm in Region XII, Mangallanes.

Signify and Australis’ mutual commitment to sustainability has been the key to a good collaboration and outstanding results.
