In Asia, our UV-C desk lamp disinfects as it lights

    October 22, 2020

Signify enters into the UV-C lighting consumer market with a desk lamp, allowing users in parts of Asia to efficiently disinfect their homes with the push of a button

Today, most people limit their reasons for leaving home.  As a result, school, work, home, and social life – more or less – take place within the same four walls.

So it’s vital to make sure that home still feels like home – and that we keep our domestic space as protected as possible. One way to achieve this is to inactivate viruses and bacteria by disinfecting surfaces in the home.

    UV-C’s time to shine

UV-C lighting has been used professionally for many years but the pandemic has seen demand skyrocket for this technology that can neutralize microorganisms on surfaces and in the air. From luminaires to chambers (microwave oven-like contraptions), our professional portfolio has expanded rapidly.

UV-C lighting is being used a wide variety of areas, including schools, gyms, supermarkets, public restrooms, indeed any contained space where people gather. The possibilities are endless!

    Now available for consumers

Consumers can now benefit from Signify’s first consumer UV-C product, the Philips UV-C disinfection desk lamp. The lamp, which is only available in parts of Asia, is able to inactivate viruses, bacteria, mold, and spores, and can disinfect rooms in a matter of minutes.

You may be thinking, that sounds great, but can some light really make such a difference? UV-C light is part of the invisible light spectrum, like UV-A and UV-B. In contrast to other UV light, naturally occurring UV-C gets filtered out by the earth’s atmosphere. And, unlike UV-A and UV-B, UV-C light works as a powerful disinfectant.
In a laboratory test, a Signify UV-C light source inactivated 99% of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 on a surface with an exposure time of just 6 seconds.1

    Small but powerful

The desk lamp is small, able to be easily moved between rooms and stored away when not in use. After selecting the room to be disinfected, the lamp can be set in the middle and switched on. Recommended cleaning times vary, depending on the size of the room. But generally, a typical bathroom takes about 15 minutes, a bedroom 30 minutes, and a living room 45 minutes.

Once the lamp is switched on, people and pets must leave the room and close the door, as exposure to UV-C light can be harmful to them.

The lamp will activate once the room is clear and no movement is detected for 30 seconds. The lamp then begins to neutralize viruses and bacteria found on surfaces. Watch the video below to see the steps in action.

    An extra layer of protection

The improper use of UV-C products can result in serious injury to your skin and eyes. Therefore, it’s important to follow the safety instructions and ensure that no people or animals are present while the lamp is active. The UV-C desk lamp has built-in sensors that monitor for movement, and automatically shuts off if any is detected.

In addition, the lamp has voice guidance to further enhance user-friendliness and advise on correct use. Due to the nature of UV-C it is important that all safety protocols are followed, and the lamp is used only as instructed.

    Happy, healthy, home

The Philips UV-C desk lamp presents a way for customers in parts of Asia to efficiently and effectively deactivate viruses, bacteria, mold, and spores present on surfaces. By increasing the levels of disinfection at home, a customer gets increased peace of mind.

The UV-C desk lamp is available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and United Arab Emirates.

1 Data made available to us by the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories at Boston University, which has been collected from a laboratory experiment conducted by Dr. Anthony Griffiths (Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine) and his team at the premises of the NEIDL (such data will be the subject of a forthcoming scientific publication by Boston University), shows that Signify’s UV C light sources irradiating the surface of a material inoculated with SARS CoV 2 (the virus that causes the COVID 19 disease) at a UV C dose of 5mJ/cm2 (exposure time 6 seconds) resulted in a 99% reduction of the SARS CoV 2 virus present on that surface.
