Lighting up a Community Rehabilitation Center in Singapore for Stroke Survivors

    February 21, 2023

Signify Singapore installed Philips Hue smart lighting solutions in a wellness room at Stroke Support Station’s renovated center in the Enabling Village, which provides caregiver support and rehabilitation services for stroke patients.

In Singapore, Stroke Support Station (S3) is the first and only stroke-focused community rehabilitation and wellness agency dedicated to meeting the needs of post-stroke survivors and their caregivers. It is a grass-roots initiative started by volunteers through the Re-learn and Enjoy Active Living (R.E.A.L.) program and strives for a better quality of life for stroke survivors through wellness programs with the support of about 30 active volunteers.

At the newly renovated center at Enabling Village, S3 supports stroke survivors on their recovery journey by providing them with a suitable environment in which they can participate in their rehabilitation programs.

To enable S3 to take a more customized approach to their classes, Signify donated Philips Hue Devere and Xamento lights for the wellness room. This provides a more immersive and productive environment for its R.E.A.L. programs and therapy sessions.

The Philips Hue lighting solutions have been beneficial for us as a charity for stroke rehabilitation and support. As the effects of a stroke may not just be physical but at times psychosocial, S3’s wellness programs have been further enhanced by the use of Signify’s Hue lighting to elevate mood and introduce relaxation during sessions."

With these smart LED lamps, S3’s wellness instructors and therapists are now able to conveniently and easily select from a variety of preset Philips Hue Scenes to pair with fitness, dance therapy, art therapy, music therapy and other wellness classes to determine the atmosphere or mood.

For example, during a Seated Tai Chi session held in February 2023 at the center, the instructor was able to choose different preset Philips Hue Scenes for different stages of the class, such as Narcissa for mindful meditation, Crocus for warming up and Mountain Breeze for ‘yang’ style practice. The experience was well received by class participants.

We like the changing light hues in the new wellness room as we are now able to transition better from active tai chi to meditative tai chi."
