    Highlights

Human centric lighting and visible light communication were two of the highlights at this year’s Light + Building event in Frankfurt, Germany. Human centric lighting is about utilizing the visual, biological and psychological effects of light. Bringing different benefits to a wide range of markets, human centric lighting was demonstrated by many leading companies. Visible light communication is mostly aimed at location-based applications but also closely tied to innovative systems in the ‘Smart City’ concept, including management of traffic and lighting infrastructure.

    Trends

For the office environment, key trends included energy management through presence detection and the combination of daylight and artificial light. Mood lighting and modular, easy-to-install lighting also featured highly, as well as lighting controlled by mobile apps and self-learning lighting solutions.

There was a lot of interest for miniature unobtrusive lighting for retail, short wavelength blue LED lighting, indirect lighting and flexible LED strips. Spectral tuning, e.g. for supermarket (off BBL lighting), and spot track lighting were also featured.

Many companies are now getting involved in the Internet of Things and there are a lot of alliances working to create protocols and standards. This field is still developing with plenty of new opportunities for intelligent solutions.

In the retrofit market, many companies now also have filament lamps that feature a single primary color and increasingly decorative shapes. Lamps are also getting bigger and brighter with even higher lumen output than incandescent lamps.
