Signify is responsible for illuminating the beautiful Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid where the biggest prize in club football is up for grabs on June 1.
It’s yet unknown if Ajax will be facing off against Liverpool in the upcoming final of the biggest European football competition. What we do know is that the Dutch will be shining a bright light on the final match.
That’s because Signify, the world leader in lighting, based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, is responsible for illuminating the beautiful Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, the setting for the final match of the biggest tournament in European club football.
The stadium in the eastern suburbs of Madrid was the first 100% LED lighting stadium installation in the world. With its seating capacity of approximately 68,000 fans, Wanda Metropolitano passed into possession of Atlético de Madrid in April of 2017, and the team played its first game there in the fall of 2017.
Interact Sports, the lighting system that has been installed in the stadium by Signify, guarantees an immersive stadium experience that starts from the moment people enter the stadium and lasts until the moment they leave.
For those watching at home, the lighting in the pitch area delivers maximum quality for television transmission and meets the latest LaLiga, UEFA and FIFA broadcast standards.
Signify’s lighting system gives control of the fully connected and integrated LED lighting for the entire stadium including façade, pitch, hospitality and also exterior lighting. The spectacular roof structure above the pitch is equipped with dynamic Color Kinetics architectural lighting, creating dazzling light shows for visitors. The lighting on the façade can be synchronized with the lighting outside the stadium, helping to create a fully mesmerizing experience.
Enrique Cerezo, President of Atlético de Madrid, says the lighting system supports the club’s ‘fan-first approach’ very well: "Thanks to Signify’s expertise and experience, all fans entering the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium can enjoy the best lighting experience enabled by the latest illumination technology."
The façade lighting ensures the structure can be seen from afar and has become a city landmark and tourist attraction in Madrid. And, the LED lighting and control system delivers energy savings of more than 60% compared to conventional technologies.
The pitch lighting can also be switched on and off instantaneously or integrated with other light shows – either on the façade or the bowl – while varying the intensity of the LED lights and syncing them to music.
Such entertainment has reached new heights of sophistication as top clubs contend with each other to produce the most spectacular light show. So, we can expect that on June 1 the art of the light show will be taken to yet another level.
Surely, combining state-of-the-art lighting as well as the final itself will be a feast for the spectators’ eyes in the illuminated Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Whichever teams end up playing for the 2019 trophy – watched by over 350 million people all over the globe – both players and spectators will enjoy a great touch of lighting innovation, powered by Signify.
